During the action, underground hideouts of acetone were found by troops, an activity that represents a risk to the safety of those who handle these substances and generates serious effects on the environment.
Within the framework of the operations against illicit activities in the border region, troops of the Mechanized Cavalry Group No. 5 General Hermógenes Maza, of the Thirtieth Brigade, in coordination with the Anti-Narcotics Directorate of the National Police, dealt a powerful blow to the finances of the GAO ELN, through the finding and subsequent destruction of several rudimentary structures used for the production of cocaine hydrochloride, in the rural area of the village El Ojito, of Cúcuta, department of Norte de Santander.
At the site, 695 kilograms of cocaine hydrochloride and 132 gallons of coca base in solution were seized, which according to the authorities, would be intended to continue the process of production and subsequent distribution of the narcotic.
Likewise, more than 1,600 gallons of liquid chemical substances were seized, including acetone, DIESEL and hydrochloric acid, in addition to 185 kilograms of solid precursors such as calcium chloride and potassium permanganate, elements used in different stages of the production of the alkaloid.
During the intervention, machinery used for large-scale production was also found, including a hydraulic press, four rudimentary mixers, microwave ovens and equipment used for distillation processes, known in these environments as worms and distillation tower.
One of the findings that caught the attention of the authorities was the existence of underground hideouts used to store acetone in containers of approximately 55 gallons. This activity represents a significant risk due to the flammable and volatile characteristics of the substance, especially when it is stored clandestinely and without the appropriate safety conditions. In addition, an eventual leak or spill can generate affectations to the soil and water sources, with consequences for the natural environment.
The destruction of this clandestine construction affects the logistical and financial technological capabilities of the GAO ELN, by preventing the production and commercialization of a significant amount of illicit substances.
In this way, Colombian National Army, in coordination with the authorities, contributes to weakening the illegal activities that finance the criminal activities of these structures and to protecting communities of the effects associated with drug trafficking.
