Working for the protection and conservation of the environment, the Colombian Navy, in coordination with the Regional Autonomous Corporation of the Dique – CARDIQUE Canal, participated in the rescue of 31 wild animals in the municipality of Córdoba, department of Bolívar.
CARDIQUE officials carried out the assessment of two boa constrictor, 16 iguanas, one snake, two tigrillos, two morrocoy turtles and eight opossums, to carry out their subsequent rescue in the Morrocoy Nature Reserve, the municipality of Carmen de Bolívar. The coordinated work conducted by both institutions led these specimens returning to their natural habitat, contributing to their recovery and the strengthening of the ecosystems of the region.
It should be noted that recovered and rescued animals play crucial ecological roles in the Colombian Caribbean biosphere. In this sense, iguanas, for example, contribute significantly to the food chain and act as transporters of nutrients between plants and carnivorous animals; in the same way, turtles, such as the morrocoy, are key specimens in seed dispersal helping to maintain balance in wetlands and watersheds. However, the excessive hunting of these animals has reduced their spaces in various regions, putting at risk not only their conservation, but in the same way the balance of the ecosystems where they play a crucial role.
The Colombian Navy will continue to participate and lead activities for the conservation of the fauna and flora of the region, working for the protection of the environment and the natural resources of the country. At the same time, it invites people to report to the authorities any action that puts the good physical condition of the local ecosystem at risk.
