Colombian Military Forces inaugurates the Women, Peace and Security Conference with the support of the U.S. Southern Command

Fuerzas Militares de Colombia inaugurai la Conferencia Mujer, Paz y Seguridad con apoyo del Comando Sur de los EE.UU.

The General Command of the Military Forces, in alliance with the Southern Command of the United States, is holding the Women, Peace and Security Conference for three days at the facilities of the José María Córdova Cadet Military School.

 

The opening ceremony was held by Brigadier General Danysh Adey Forero Camacho, Commander of the Joint Strategic Transition Command, representing the Chief of defense of Colombia, General Hugo Alejandro López Barreto. The event takes place on May 5, 6 and 7, with the participation of gender advisers and representatives of the Military Forces, under the leadership of the gender office of the general command of the military forces and the gender areas of each branch.

 

In his speech, Brigadier General Forero Camacho highlighted the commitment of the more than 240,000 men and women who make up the institution, paying tribute to those who have contributed to the construction of the nation and to the members of the Military Forces in land, sea, river, air, space and cyberspace domains, who fulfill their mission of defense and protection of the Colombian people, within the framework of a culture respectful of human rights.

 

The officer highlighted that incorporating a gender perspective strengthens the planning, execution and evaluation of military operations, and reaffirmed the zero tolerance policy against any form of gender-based violence. He in the same way highlighted the international cooperation with the Southern Command and the Florida International University, which contributes to skills and the exchange of experiences by the institutions.

 

The conference takes as its central axis the Resolution 1325 of the United Nations Security Council, an international instrument that recognizes the essential role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, the consolidation of peace and security. This academic space seeks to strengthen resources, unify criteria and deepen the incorporation of the gender approach at all levels of military management.

 

The instruction team of the Southern Command highlighted the strategic leadership of the Colombian Military Forces in the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, highlighting the particular context in which the exchange takes place, as a factor that enriches the academic process.

 

At the end of the opening ceremony, the attendees were invited to take advantage of this space with discipline and critical spirit, projecting the learnings towards the fulfillment of the institutional mission. Through this conference, the Colombian Military Forces ratify their commitment to equity, institutional cohesion and respect for human dignity in the fulfillment of the constitutional mission.
