Within the framework of World Environment Day, the Thirteenth Brigade reaffirms its commitment to the protection of strategic ecosystems to increase the water supply of millions of Colombians, through environmental restoration, conservation and ecological education events in Bogotá and Cundinamarca.
The protection of the territory in the same way implies the defense of natural resources. For this reason, soldiers of the Thirteenth Brigade of Colombian National Army carry out permanent acts aimed at the conservation of strategic ecosystems, the recovery of degraded areas and the preservation of water sources that supply Bogotá and much of Cundinamarca.
This effort is mainly focused on two of the most important ecosystems in the country: the Sumapaz Páramo, the largest in the world, and the Chingaza National Natural Park, considered true water factories for the region and fundamental for the water security of millions of citizens.
In these areas of special environmental importance, the High Mountain Battalion No. 1 Teniente Coronel Antonio Arredondo and the Medium Cavalry Group No. 13 Tequendama are units that, in addition to working for the security and stability of the territory, actively contribute to the protection and recovery of these strategic ecosystems.
As part of this work, the Brigade has three forest nurseries in the High Mountain Battalion No. 1, the Medium Cavalry Group No. 13 Tequendama and the Instruction, Training and Recurrent training Battalion No. 13. of these spaces, native plant elements are produced and preserved, including frailejones and other fundamental specimens for the processes of ecological restoration and recovery of vegetation cover.
The work is led by five nursery soldiers trained in production, management and conservation of seedlings, who contribute their technical knowledge to the strengthening of environmental restoration strategies.
Thanks to this coordinated effort with environmental authorities, territorial institutions and communities, more than 32,500 seedlings of native specimens have been planted during 2026, contributing to the recovery of ecosystems, the protection of water sources, the carbon sequestration and the preservation of regional biodiversity.
The Thirteenth Brigade carries out permanent environmental education programs aimed at soldiers and communities, promoting sustainable activities related to the efficient use of water, the proper management of solid waste, recycling and the protection of natural resources.
Each tree planted represents a concrete action in favor of sustainability, the conservation of water sources and the well-being of future generations. Through these initiatives, the Thirteenth Brigade ratifies its commitment to the protection of the nation's environmental heritage and to the construction of more sustainable, safe and resilient territories.
