As part of the commemoration of World Oceans Day, a date that invites reflection on the importance of protecting the seas and promoting the sustainable use of their resources, the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, through the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés Isla, and in coordination with the Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina – Coralina, carried out three ecological recovery activities for taking care of sea specimens seized off the island territory.
During these activities, 842 kilograms of shovel snail shells and other sea organisms were returned to the sea ecosystems of the Archipelago, contributing to the ecological recovery of these environments. These elements play essential functions within the ecosystem, by providing minerals that favor the formation and stability of the seabed, serve as a refuge for multiple specimens and support natural processes that strengthen the resilience of coral reefs and other strategic habitats of the Colombian insular Caribbean.
The initiative is part of the actions aimed at mitigating the effects of the illicit extraction and commercialization of sea specimens, enabling biological resources improperly removed to return to the environment from which they were taken. For this activity, the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés Isla supported maritime transport and the safety in areas previously defined by the environmental authority, contributing its resources of the military operation to the fulfillment of the objectives set jointly with Coralina.
