The environmental activity was conducted in the Ronda Island sector, reaffirming the commitment of the Naval Institution to the protection of the country's ecosystems.
Within the framework of operations aimed at environmental protection and the preservation of Amazonian biodiversity, the Amazon Naval Force, in coordination with the IKOZOA Foundation, carried out the rescue of 150 turtles in the Ronda Island sector, on the Amazon River, as part of joint efforts for the conservation of wildlife in this region of the south of the country.
The activity was carried out within the framework of the Unified operation of the State and had the support of units of the Coast Guard Group of the Amazon, which works transport and safe accompaniment of the specimens to the point of rescue. The turtles, belonging to the Cupiso, Taricaya and Cupiyo specimens, were returned to their natural habitat, contributing to the strengthening of ecosystems and the environmental report of the Amazon River.
These specimens, native to the Colombian Amazon, play a fundamental role in river ecosystems, participating in the natural control of aquatic organisms and in the ecological dynamics of rivers. However, some of them are threatened by practices such as illegal hunting, wildlife trafficking and the progressive degradation of their habitat, which makes it essential to implement protection and conservation operations to work for their survival.
Through this type of initiatives, the Colombian Navy, through the Amazon Naval Force, ratifies its commitment to the preservation of the Nation's natural heritage and to the joint inter-institutional activities that promote environmental sustainability, reaffirming its presence, vocation of service and responsibility to the communities and ecosystems of the Colombian Amazon.
