Coast Guard units of the Colombian Navy evacuated a 47-year-old Colombian man from waters near Quitasueño Key in the Caribbean Sea to San Andrés, given that he had convulsions and fainting when he was fishing.
The protocol established for the evacuation began once the emergency was reported by the owners of the Colombian-registered boat Miss Ida, to the Traffic Control and Maritime Surveillance Station. Immediately, it coordinated with the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés to deploy a Rapid Reaction Unit -URR- to a meeting point in the sea near Quitasueño, about 231 kilometers from San Andres island.
Once they arrived at the meeting point, the crew of the Naval Institution provided first aid to the patient and transported him for ten hours, in adverse weather conditions to the dock of the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés, where he was handed over to officials of the Emergency Regulatory Center and subsequently taken to the Departmental Hospital.
In order to contribute to the ancestral rights of fishing and safeguard human life at sea, the Colombian Navy, through its units attached to the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, will continue to conduct permanent humanitarian support to the island and Raizal people of the department of the Archipelago, to provide timely support for this type of emergencies and medical transfers when needed by the inhabitants.
