Units of the Colombian Navy in joint operations with Peruvian customs authorities on the Amazon River found 1,263 gallons of fuel that were carried on board two rudimentary boats that did not have the required documentation for their transport.
The military operation took place in La Isla de Fantasia sector in Leticia, where units attached to the Amazon Coast Guard Station as part of the river controls carried out jointly with authorities of the neighboring country, intercepted two wooden boats, finding inside 21 barrels carrying 1,263 gallons of gasoline.
The boat did not have a registration number and it was manned by men of Peruvian nationality, who at the time of the inspection did not present the required documents that support their legality. The fuel found was given to the customs authorities of Peru.
The Colombian Navy reaffirms its commitment to the economic development of the region and will continue to intensify river searches and control operations. It also invites the community to denounce individuals and criminal organizations in the service of smuggling that commit crimes in the south-east of the country.
