Coast Guard units of the Colombian Navy, attached to the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia - CESYP, received, Saturday in the afternoon, January 11 of the current year, a report from the Port Authority of Providencia in which, thanks to information from a fisherman in the area, the sighting of a drifting boat was received; a heavy odor associated with a lifeless body in a state of decomposition emanated from the boat.
Immediately, the Coast Guard Stations of San Andrés Isla and Providencia initiated a search and rescue operation, deploying three Rapid Reaction Units - URR to Manzanillo Beach, in Providencia. The search efforts were carried out during the night of Saturday, without obtaining positive results.
The operation resumed on the morning of Sunday, January 12, when a green rudimentary wood boat was found 5.6 nautical miles (9.2 kilometers) south of the island of Providencia, in which a lifeless human body was on board, in an advanced state of decomposition.
The crew members of the Naval Institution carried out the procedure and began with the extraction of water of the inside of the boat, which was submerged by 50%, in order to tow it to dry land, however, during the towing process the ship capsized.
The lifeless body recovered was taken to a safe dock and put into custody of the authorities in order to initiate the corresponding procedures.
Units of the Colombian Navy and the Colombian Aerospace Force, as of the CESYP, continue with the search efforts by land, sea and air, with the aim of carrying out a sweep in the area and confirming or ruling out the presence of other lifeless bodies in the sector.
