The mother would have suffered a placental retention due to a preterm birth and she was in a serious state of health.

A 32-year-old woman and her newborn baby were rescued and evacuated in the middle of the night by units of the Colombian Navy, after the boat in which they were traveling, had an engine failure near the Bocas del Coco sector, on the Atrato River, in the department of Choc贸.

The Urab谩 Coast Guard Station duly attended the emergency call made by the medical staff of IPS Golfo Salud, when they were traveling in a boat from Ungu铆a, Department of Choc贸.

Despite the difficult climate conditions and heavy rains in this subregion of the country, the units moved to the scene to rescue and evacuate the pregnant mother who was in serious health conditions, after suffering a placental retention due to a premature birth of a six-month-old baby.

As the Coast Guard crew approached the emergency ship, they had to launch flares to find the mouth of the river and detect possible objects that may put the Rapid Reaction Unit at risk due to heavy rains and poor visibility of the area.

Once at the scene of the emergency, they rescued the mother, her newborn daughter and the medical staff, who were transported to the port of Turbo where an ambulance was waiting for them. Troops quickly transported the woman to the hospital, while the newborn was taken to a clinic for neonatal care.

The crew of the Urab谩 Coast Guard Station proceeded to return to the Bocas del Coco sector on the Atrato River to find the boat and its pilot, towing them to the dock in Turbo, Antioquia.
