Among the rescued foreigners were two women.
In the Maritime Traffic Control Tower of the Coast Guard Station of Santa Marta a call was received through the Navy VHF system by the sailing ship Lady of the Seas, with flag of Malta, in which they reported a break in one of their sails and also that they in the same way did not have fuel to continue on their course.
Immediately, a Rapid Reaction Unit – URR was deployed, which found the ship, approximately 22 kilometers west of Santa Marta, with five crew members on board, who said they were in good health and thanked the prompt response in the assistance.
At the end of the routine procedures and the inspection of the ship, it was taken together with its crew members to the dock of the Navy International de Santa Marta, where they were out of danger and put into custody of Colombian Migration officials.
It should be noted that thanks to the fact that the Lady of the Seas ship informed the situation in a timely manner, it was possible to provide support in the emergency without major setbacks, this taking into account that the time of the report to the authorities has a significant impact on the effectiveness of search and rescue operations at sea, since weather conditions change constantly in this type of environments as well as the currents and so ungoverned ships can drift several kilometers in a few hours, making it difficult to find them, even more if they do not have communication or location equipment.
