Colombian Navy rescues 22 migrants in San Andrés island waters

428 irregular migrants have been rescued by the Naval Institution during the 2023 in the Archipelago.

In the Caribbean Sea, about 26 kilometers from San Andrés, Coast Guard units of the Colombian Navy safeguarded the lives of 22 migrants of different nationalities, who were being transported on board a boat that apparently intended to reach Central America.

The operation began because the radars of the Traffic Control and Maritime Surveillance System detected a suspicious contact moving at high speed towards the south of the island, which is why a Rapid Reaction Unit of the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés was sent in the area.

After a chase, the crew of the Naval Institution carried out the maritime interception of the boat, finding inside two San Andres’ crew members who were transporting an Argentine, a Colombian, an Ecuadorian and 19 Venezuelans, including three minors, violating merchant Navy regulations.

The rescued were taken to the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés where their health condition was checked. Subsequently, they were put into custody of Colombian Migration officials and the minors were given to Departmental Family Commissariat. For their part, the two crew members of the ship were arrested and put into custody of the Attorney General's Office.
