Colombian Navy works for the preservation of the environment in the Amazonas region

The Navy of Colombia in fulfillment of the Naval Campaign Artemisa has reported in the present year, the finding of close to four tons of fish of different species, 270 kg of meat of wild boar, six turtles and more than 59 cubic meters of wood, in operations conducted jointly coordinated and inter-agency in the departments of Amazonas, Putumayo, Caquetá, Meta and Guaviare.

These operations have been carried out by troops attached to Navy Infantry Brigade No.3 and the Amazon Coast Guard Group, in permanent compliance with current regulations that regulate activities such as fishing, hunting, logging and marketing of wood or animals, to protect biodiversity and the environment in the region.

Thus, during 2022, through search and control operations in the main water tributaries of the southeast of the country, 3,976 kilograms of fish of the animals known as Palometa, Pirarucú and Mota were found by troops, which did not meet the size for marketing, or were taken in breeding season or report excessive levels of mercury for human consumption.

At the same time, in the municipality of Puerto Nariño – Amazonas, 270 kilograms of wild boar meat were found by troops inside a sack, corresponding to 13 specimens, which were intended to be marketed without the due cold chain and illegally in the triple border market, taking into account that environmental corporations have only authorized this practice for some indigenous communities as part of their food livelihood.

In the same way, six turtles of the animal Morrocoy were rescued, which allegedly would be marketed in the urban area illegally. The Military Forces found them abandoned in a sack, on a spot of the road that leads from the municipality of Puerto Arturo to the municipality of San José del Guaviare-Guaviare.

The animals found were put into custody of environmental authorities such as: Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the North and East Amazon, the Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the South of the Amazon, Corpoamazonia and the National Authority of Aquaculture and Fisheries. No arrests were made during the operations.
