During one of the activities, a chestnut-billed toucan was assisted, which had been found by members of the Military Forces in an abandoned house, while carrying out search and area control procedures.
With the firm purpose of contributing to the well-being and improving the quality of life of the most vulnerable communities of the main Pacific port, the Colombian Navy through the Navy Infantry Brigade No.2, in coordination with public and private institutions, led two wellbeing activities in the Special District of Buenaventura, Valle de Cauca department, focused on comprehensive medical and veterinary assistance.
More than 18 health professionals and volunteers came to the Nayita neighborhood to provide reproductive health care services, including pap smears, clinical breast exams, taking tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. Awareness campaigns on the detection and prevention of prostate cancer, and educational activities for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections and diseases (STIs/STDs) were in the same way carried out, benefiting 378 people from this sector of the Special District.
During the activity, 7,200 units of liquid food supplement and 30 food baskets were in the same way distributed to vulnerable families, as a contribution to strengthening their food and nutritional security.
Similarly, in the La Bocana Beach sector, Bazán Bocana village, a well-known tourist destination in the municipality of Buenaventura, a free animal wellbeing activity was held under the slogan Everyone for the little animals of La Bocana. The activity managed to provide support to more than 130 domestic animals, including dogs and cats, through veterinary services.
In this activity, a chestnut-billed toucan was in the same way urgently assisted, which had been found by members of the Military Forces of the Colombian Navy in an abandoned house while they were carrying out search and area control tasks. The bird received specialized veterinary care in order to safeguard its state of health and promote its recovery and, subsequently, was handed to the Environmental Public Establishment -EPA- of Buenaventura.
Thanks to the commitment of 14 veterinary professionals, 55 sterilization procedures and 77 health and deworming treatments were conducted, contributing to the wellbeing of animals and the prevention of zoonotic diseases. In addition, 57 food baskets were distributed to women heads of household, reaffirming the institutional commitment to vulnerable families in this sector of the Colombian Pacific.
These activities were made possible thanks to the leadership of Navy Infantry River Battalion No. 24, which sent its human talent and resources of the military operation to ensure security and support the logistics of the activities, in coordination with public and private institutions such as Etikaverde, the Lions Club, the League Against Cancer, the University of the Pacific, the Buenaventura District Health Secretariat, the Pro y Paz Foundation, the Nayita neighborhood Community Action Board and Ventura Group, in the medical; and with the Fungeisam Foundation and the Lions Club, in the animal wellbeing activity.
