“Connor” the Air Force's first trained dog to help expulse birds

A distinguished member of the Aeronautical Fire Station of the Air Combat Command No. 2, CACOM 2, is Connor, a charismatic and energetic common Border Collie dog, which was trained in birds expulsion to serve at the airfield of this Air Military Unit more than three years ago.

Connor is the first graduate of the Military Trained Dog Training School, ESCAM, with training in expulsion of birds, a specialty different of the usual ones, such as: substance detection, currency, search and rescue, among others. In this new area, the dogs contribute their skills as an important part in the prevention of the danger posed by wildlife in air operations.

The resources of this dog trained together with its handler, are effective to repelling birds such as caraway, herons, vultures and sparrow hawks, which usually fly over and stay in areas close to the runway of the Air Combat Command No. 2 and, in an outstanding way, Connor has in the same way detected the nests of these birds, an action that leads the military environment personnel to find and relocate them, maximizing their important operation when contributing to operational security.

The most important mission for Connor is that all CACOM 2 crews have safe flights and, for the Colombian Air Force, these partners contribute satisfactorily in the framework of air operations in defense of Colombians.
