Thanks to the strategy of instruction in Education on the Risk of Explosive Devices (ERAE), implemented by the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion No. 4, the indigenous people of the municipality of Barrancominas identified a suspicious object in a cassava plantation, so they immediately notified the demining soldiers, who attended the situation immediately.
A non-technical study team went to the site and, after confirming the device, proceeded to mark and isolate the area for ensuring that no collateral damage to the constructions or the community. Subsequently, the controlled destruction of the device was carried out.
In addition to the efforts to demine the national territory and eliminate these threats, the Humanitarian Demining Engineers Brigade has redoubled its efforts to carry out interactive workshops and awareness-raising talks in the intervention areas supported by educational materials and the Nata Desmina show, which made it possible to train people in vulnerable schools and communities.
These instructions are essential for preventing accidents, as they teach people to identify potential hazards and take preventive measures. It is important to emphasize that the strengthening of this strategy contributes to significantly reducing the number of victims, in addition to promoting cooperation between the Military Forces and the communities in order to eradicate this problem.
According to the Office of the Commissioner for Peace, anti-personnel mines continue to pose a threat, especially in rural villages and conflict zones. More than 12,520 victims have been reported in recent years, including 305 minors.
To date, the promoters of the Humanitarian Demining Engineers Brigade have increased awareness among more than 85,000 people in various areas of the country, promoting a culture of safe behavior.
