Heavy blow against deforestation in Caquetá: National Army arrests man transporting illegal timber

Golpe contra la deforestación en Caquetá

More than 100 pieces of wood were found by troops at a military checkpoint in Cartagena del Chairá, in an action against the illicit exploitation of natural resources.

As part of the military operations aimed at protecting the environment and combating crimes that hit the country's natural resources, troops of the Twelfth Brigade, of the Sixth Division of Colombian National Army, in coordination with the National Police, reported the arrested in flagrante delicto of a man who was transporting wood illegally in the department of Caquetá.

The procedure was carried out in the area known as Muelle Relleno, in the municipality of Cartagena del Chairá, where the authorities maintained a checkpoint in order to verify the traffic of vehicles and prevent illicit activities related to the transportation of illegally extracted forest products.

During the operation on a vehicle, the members of the Military Forces found 106 pieces of wood, which were transported without the respective environmental permits proving their legal origin, nor the documentation required by the authorities for their use and transport.

Faced with this situation, an individual was arrested in flagrante delicto, who must answer to the authorities for the alleged crime of illicit exploitation of renewable natural resources, typified in article 328 of the Colombian Criminal Code.

According to the authorities, this type of illegal activities generates serious environmental impacts, especially in regions such as the Colombian Amazon, where indiscriminate logging contributes to increased deforestation, loss of biodiversity and deterioration of strategic ecosystems. In addition, on many occasions these illicit activities are used by criminal structures to finance other illegal activities, hitting the security and sustainable development of communities.

The forest elements found, the vehicle and the arrested person were put into custody of the authorities to carry out the corresponding judicial procedures.

Colombian National Army will continue to carry out coordinated and inter-institutional military operations in the department of Caquetá, with the purpose of countering environmental crimes, protecting natural resources and contributing to the preservation of the ecosystems that are part of Colombia's environmental wealth.
