The heroic rescue of a 62-year-old man by the Colombian National Army, who had fallen by a chasm of at least 20 meters near Mocoa, Putumayo

El heroico rescate del Ejército Nacional a hombre de 62 años que cayó por un abismo de al menos 20 metros en vía de Mocoa, Putumayo

Using their ingenuity and tactical skills, they improvised a rope with the shirts of their uniforms, securing the injured cyclist with a severe wound on the head.

In a turn of events that seems to be taken from a divine story, soldiers of the Colombian National Army became instruments of a miracle, while commemorating the Virgin of Fatima.

The eleven members of the Military Forces were on a pilgrimage activity in the place known as the Filo de Hambre in the municipality of Mocoa, Putumayo. Once the activity was over, they started their way back to the Rainforest Brigade N.° 27, at which time, in what seems to be a response to their commitment of faith and devotion, they became the chosen ones to conduct an act of salvation after hearing some desperate calls for help from a group of people on the side of the road asking for help for a man who had fallen.

A few 20 meters from his location, badly injured and barely conscious, was Mr. Fredy Buenaventura, a 62-year-old cycling man who had suffered an accident moments before.

“It could be said that the virgin appeared to Fredy, or rather, the soldiers of Colombian National Army accompanied by her: We did not hesitate for a moment, we got out of the car and arrived at the place where the man was to help him,” said Deputy Sergeant Gilberto Devía Guzmán, a Non-commissioned Officer of the Comprehensive operation and Development Support Battalion No. 6.

Using their ingenuity and tactical skills, they improvised a rope with the shirts of their uniforms, securing the injured cyclist with a severe impact on the head. The task of getting him to safety was not easy, it took about an hour to get him out of the place.

Once Mr. Fredy was brought to safety, the assistance of an ambulance was requested to transfer him to the nearest health center, where he received the necessary assistance.

The soldiers' commitment didn't end there; their concern for Fredy's well-being led them to visit his home, making sure he was accompanied by his family while he recovered. Fredy, for his part, in an act of deep gratitude, considers the soldiers as true angels who saved his life.

This extraordinary event not only highlights the bravery and commitment of the Colombian National Army to serve and protect its citizens, but in the same way demonstrates the quick operation of our soldiers when it comes to saving a life, weaving bonds of trust and solidarity between the military institution and the communities we serve.
