Highly complex aeromedical evacuation saves a life in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Evacuación aeromédica de alta complejidad salva una vida en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

In a humanitarian operation carried out in a high mountain area, the Colombian Aerospace Force carried out the aeromedical evacuation of a US citizen who required urgent medical assistance in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, working for his safe transfer to a more complex healthcare center.

The mission was carried out at the request of the Emergency and Emergency Regulatory Center-CRUE del Magdalena in coordination with the National Personnel Recovery Center (CENRP), which achieved a timely and effective response to the emergency in this difficult-to-access region.

The patient was transported aboard a Huey II helicopter, an aircraft configured for aeromedical evacuation operations, along with military medical personnel of the No.3, in charge of permanently monitoring vital signs, as well as clinical stabilization during air travel.

In order to get to the point, in the Nabusimake indigenous reserve in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta at about 6,500 feet altitude, a confined area, and with adverse weather conditions and cloud cover in the area of operations, it is required skill and efficiency on the part of the crew to carry out the evacuation of the patient in a safe way.

Finally, the foreign citizen was taken to the city of Santa Marta, where it was given to a hospital to receive specialized medical assistance. Through this type of operations, the Colombian Aerospace Force ratifies its commitment to the protection of human life and humanitarian support throughout the national territory.
