Antioquia ranks first nationally among departments with the highest number of victims of anti-personnel mines, reporting 2,632.
The work carried out by mine clearance specialists and canines, led to decontaminating the municipalities of Alejandr铆a and San Luis, in the east of Antioquia.
Since 2015, soldiers of the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion No.7, visited those areas where 88 antipersonnel mine casualties are reported.
In the course of the mission, members of the Military Forces managed to decontaminate more than 523,000 square meters, that is, in Alejandria 96,676 square meters were cleared and in San Luis 426,588, in turn, 68 explosive devices were destroyed.
It is estimated that more than 19,000 inhabitants of these two municipalities benefit of this declaration of their territories.
It is noteworthy that, on this occasion, the municipalities of Necocl铆 and San Juan de Urab谩, which were decontaminated with Non-Technical Study teams by soldiers of the Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion No.6.
This is how the Antioquia region reaches 33 territories free of suspected anti-personnel mines, thanks to the work of the mine clearance specialists of the National Army, who have destroyed 799 anti-personnel mines, 59 unexploded ordnance, freeing more than 2,500,000 square meters.
