Increase in the number of units, strengthening of security and technology implementation: announcements of the Minister of Defense for Santander

 

Two Military Police companies of Colombian National Army will be created in Bucaramanga to support urban security.

 

About 500 members of the Military Forces of the Military and the National Police will arrive at the department this year.

 

The strengthening of the video surveillance system in the metropolitan area will be promoted, with the implementation of state-of-the-art technology.

 

During the Peace and Security Council held in Floridablanca, Santander, led by Minister of National Defense, Pedro Sánchez Suárez, along with the military and police commanders, the Governor of the department and several mayors, key announcements were made in favor of the tranquility and well-being of the people of Santander.

 

Minister Sánchez Suárez assured that, in the coming days, Bucaramanga will have two Military Police companies of Colombian National Army (more than 350 members of the Military Forces) which will conduct functions of Defense Support to the Civil Authority in strengthening urban security.

 

In the same way, he announced that the number of units in the department has been increasing progressively, with the deployment of 90 Army soldiers, 219 navy men and 270 police officers, some already in operations and others to arrive in the coming days.

 

As for the technological implementation, the Minister referred to the Emergency and Security Management Center, an initiative that will benefit several municipalities whose purpose is to strengthen the response capacity in regional security. This project, with an investment of 52 billion pesos, of which 39 thousand of them contributed by the Ministry of the Interior, which will include state-of-the-art cameras with facial and vehicular recognition capabilities, as well as technological tools for anticipation, mobility and reaction.

 

The head of the Ministry of Defense in the same way highlighted the sustained progress in security in Santander in 2025: 

 

* kidnaping reduced to zero cases during the year.

 

* 40% decrease in robberies.

 

* Declaration of the department as a territory free of anti-personnel mines.

 

" The permanent efforts deployed this year against illegal groups and common organized crime are translating into tangible results: the threat of  43 criminal structures have been neutralized, 7,422 people have been detained, the threat of 29 members of the GAO have neutralized as well as 11 minors recovered of the ranks of these armed groups," Minister Pedro Sánchez Suárez highlighted.

 

For its part, the National Police will implement in the coming days a technological system that will support in the prevention and anticipation of criminal acts, which will lead consolidating the good security indicators in the region.
