Military Forces initiate containment plan against deforestation in Meta

The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, has launched the Containment Plan against Deforestation, opening the pillar: Military Forces and territorial strengthening (Deforestation Control of the Amazon).

In Colombia, when talking about deforestation, on the agenda are the departments of Meta and Guaviare, strategic territories for the nation and the world, since in them there is an extensive vegetation for the Colombian Orinoquia and Amazon region. There is a considerable loss there, which requires measures capable of reducing the problem, which without control diminishes the existence of biodiversity.

In response to this immediate need and at the head of the Ministries of Defense and Environment, the National Army, Colombian Air Force, National Police, Attorney General of the Nation, National Parks and Cormacarena, there is a coordination in a solid unified operation capable of facing the environmental challenges and the multicriminality actions that daily attack these natural reserves of the planet.

Thus, this institutional cohesion is strengthened in current environmental issues, through permanent instruction, by institutions working for the restoration of the Amazon Biome and all its biodiversity of fauna and flora.

The United Nations Organization has designed a wide educational work to provide the Military Forces, with academic spaces for those who work for the environment and against its related crimes. Claudia Guerrero, a forestry engineer and official of the institution and in charge of providing knowledge and experience to the Military Forces, affirms: "Our interest is that defense sector officials have clear environmental concepts so that they implement them in their operation against deforestation, land grabbing, mining extraction, illicit plantations, extensive livestock and expansion of the agricultural frontier."

In addition, she said, it is essential the permanent accompaniment to the institutions of the defense sector and environmental corporations, so that activities are carried out in favor of the protection, restoration and sustainable use of the environment.

In this way, 30 people with functions inherent to the care of the environment in the department of Meta, were trained and now have the tools that lead them to execute procedures to combat the problem of deforestation, a crime that is the cause of the deterioration of the natural ecosystems of the nation.
