Military forces recognize the important contribution of military women in history

“Women's empowerment must continue to be a central element of the State's efforts to address social, economic and political challenges around the world.” General Luis Fernando Navarro.

 

In an impressive ceremony held at the General José María Córdova Military Cadet School, 65 women of the National Army, the Colombian Navy and the Colombian Air Force were awarded the Simona Amaya military medal, who with work, collaboration and support stand out within their respective areas of competence.

 

In the ceremony presided over by the minister of National Defence, Diego Molano, and the General Commander of the Military Forces, general Luis Fernando Navarro, 25 women of National Army, 15 of the Navy of Colombia and 25 of the Colombian Air Force were awarded; their work as officers and sub officers, has contributed Resources through discipline, organization and struggle, bringing to them education and also a the legacy for the future generations.

 

The military ceremony for granting the medal Simona Amaya aims to reward and encourage women to be brave, determined, entrepreneurial, and to work for the exercise of the missions entrusted with mysticism, belief, professionalism and spirit of self-improvement, thus honoring the heroine of the country which wore as a man and she decided to join the troops of the Patriot Army to fight for the independence of New Granada, along with the Liberator, Simón Bolívar.

 

The role of women is and has been a determining factor in the Colombian Military Forces, who currently play an active role in institutional growth, reporting the incorporation of the first female soldiers into the Regular Ranks of Officers in 1976 in the National Army, 1984 in the Colombian Navy and 1979 in the Colombian Air Force; in the same way, as members of the Regular Ranks in the ranks of Non-Commissioned Officers, in 1983.

This important recognition takes place in the framework of International Women's Day; the soldiers of land, sea, air and river send a greeting of congratulations to all the military and civilian women who, being mothers, professionals, partners, sisters and wives, contribute to the construction of a better country, and encourage the men of the Military Forces to fulfill the constitutional mission.
