Yarumal, known as The Star of the North of Antioquia, stands out for its agricultural vocation, the warmth of its people, its tourist attraction and the richness of its biodiversity in fauna and flora.
Currently, the territory is being intervened by soldiers of the 7th Humanitarian Demining Engineer Battalion, who are responsible for decontaminating areas hit by anti-personnel mines.
The troops are working on the basis of information provided by the Office of the High Commissioner for Peace – Action Group against Anti-Personnel Mines, an institution that has identified 136 contamination events in the municipality.
In 2026, the demining work is already being carried out in ten villages: Yarumalito, Rosarito, Santa Juana, La Bella, La Siria, Blanco Medios, La Bramadora and Chorros Blancos Abajo – Mallarino – Cañaveral. In the same way, in the Mina Vieja village there is the Alto de Ventanas, a protected area that is part of the National System of Protected Areas of Colombia, which reinforces the importance of these actions for environmental conservation and the safety of communities.
The commander of the Humanitarian Demining Battalion No. 7, Lieutenant Colonel Yesid Carreño Sua, highlighted that in the municipality of Yarumal, north of Antioquia, progress is being made decisively in carrying out non-technical studies and in education processes on the risk of mines, which are fundamental to protect the life of communities.
"Today we are not only working on the identification and elimination of explosive devices, but in the same way on the training the inhabitants. To date, we have trained 321 inhabitants, providing them with safe tools and behaviors that led them to recognize the risks and protect themselves while we move forward in the decontamination of the territory," said the lieutenant colonel.
According to official figures, 61 victims of anti-personnel mines have been reported in Yarumal, a reality that reinforces the duty. "the mission is clear: to contribute to the tranquility and security of families, to restore confidence to rural communities and to led them to return to transit and work their lands without fear," Carreño concluded.
The commitment of the mine clearance specialists of Colombian National Army is to conduct the total decontamination of the municipality, working for safe territories, free of mines and with greater opportunities for the social, economic and tourist development of Yarumal.
