Colombian National Army, in the department of Meta, has among the most relevant duties the preservation of the environment and biodiversity, the protection of the fauna of the Colombian Orinoqu铆a region; it is an operation carried out in coordination with the environmental authorities and community to ensure preservation and safety of nature.

Troops of the Alban Engineering Battalion No.7 of the Seventh Brigade in coordination with the Corporation for Sustainable Development of the Special Management area La Macarena, Cormacarena, carried out the rescue of a tamandu谩 or melero bear (Tamandua tetradactyla) in Chichimene, municipality of Acac铆as, Meta.

Thanks to the timely information of the community, the specimen was rescued by the Army and Cormacarena.  The melero bear was found in a delicate state of health, with wounds and beatings in the forelimbs, for which he was immediately taken to the Biopark Los Ocarros to be assisted by specialized personnel.

In 2021, the National Army has contributed to the rescue and recovery of different native animals of the Colombian altillanura region, including turtles, cockatoo parrots, boa constrictor and bears typical of the native fauna; many of them in poor health and others in captivity, providing medical assistance and returning them to their natural habitat to ensure their survival and prevent the extinction of the animals.
