Within the framework of sustained military operations and thanks to intelligence work, troops of the anti-explosive group of the Twenty-Seventh Rainforest Brigade, unit a of the Sixth Division of Colombian National Army, report the finding and destruction of more than 800 kilograms of explosives in the village of La Rosa, municipality of Puerto Asís, department of Putumayo.
This material contained a highly volatile mixture of ammonium nitrate with diesel petroleum, which was used for the manufacture of rudimentary explosives in rudimentary furnaces. It is estimated that more than 2,500 anti-personnel mines could have been produced with this amount of supplies, in open violation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and human rights, when used against the inhabitants and the Military Forces.
According to military intelligence information, these explosives would be used by the illegal armed group Comandos de Frontera in rural areas of the departments of Putumayo, Caquetá, Amazonas and Cauca, especially on roads used by peasant and indigenous communities.
The finding was made in an area of thick vegetation, very close to a populated area, which posed a serious risk to men, women and children in the region. For security reasons, the material was taken to a controlled site, where it was subsequently safely destroyed by explosives handling experts.
This result of the military operation constitutes a serious blow to the logistical and criminal structures of the organized armed groups that commit crimes in the south of the country, and reaffirms the commitment of Colombian National Army to the protection of life, security and well-being of communities.
