On January 27, a new scientific journey of the Colombian Aerospace Force (FAC) to the Antarctic continent will begin at the city of Bogotá. A C-130 Hercules aircraft will fly from the Military Transport Air Command (CATAM), with its crew and a group of researchers who are part of the VIII Air Campaign of the Colombian Air Force and the XII Antarctic Expedition of Colombia.
The campaign will be executed by January 27 and February 12, by carrying out five Antarctic crossings to King George Island, as well as a mission to the Joint Antarctic Base Marambio, in order to work to increase logistical support and the execution of scientific activities on the Antarctic continent.
Within the framework of this campaign, the Colombian Aerospace Force is conducting four strategic projects that reflect the firm national commitment to scientific development, technological innovation and inter-institutional cooperation. These initiatives integrate the Institution's specialized human talent with allies of the academic and scientific sector, and are carried out in one of the most demanding environments on the planet: Antarctica.
The projects are:
1. Project Colombian Scientific Antarctic Station Hercules.
2. HACAE Project - Implementation of a Space Analog Scientific Habitat for Antarctica.
3. Southern Hydrogen Project, aimed at a sustainable operation in energy matters.
4. South Wind Project - Wind modeling for air operations in Antarctic environment.
Through this new journey to the white continent, the Colombian Aerospace Force reaffirms its commitment to the strategic projection of the country in environments of international scientific interest, strengthening research, cooperation and military operations capacity in extreme environments.
In the same way, within the framework of the VIII Antarctic Air Campaign, the Colombian Aerospace Force prepares and projects its crews in real extreme environment operations, strengthening air safety, decision-making and the excellence of the military operation.
These acts consolidate Colombia's activity in Antarctica and contribute to the development of scientific knowledge, in accordance with the national guidelines and the commitments acquired.
