Orion Naval Campaign is the cornerstone for the global fight against drug trafficking

1,073 tons of narcotics have been found during the nine versions of the Campaign.

 

The results of the Multinational Naval Campaign Orion have consolidated this operation as the cornerstone in the global fight against the drugs trade, thanks to the integration and synergy of 41 countries of America, Africa, and Europe, who during the nine versions have been supported by the National Government, under the leadership of the Navy of Colombia, which featured the work together, coordinated and inter-agency with the other institutions for national and international fight against this global problem.

 

The effort and commitment of the countries that have participated in the various versions of the Campaign stopped near some 1,834 million doses of drugs were marketed and consumed throughout the world, 716 tonnes of cocaine hydrochloride, and 266 tons of marijuana have been found during the nine versions of this international operation with a global scope.

 

This sustained effort not only represents an unprecedented step in the reduction of the demand for narcotics, but in the same way it is an important benefit to public health worldwide, since the cocaine finds in the nine versions of Orion, would have get 358 thousand new users, in addition, 733 thousand medical emergencies were prevented, in other words, 7,160 overdose deaths were prevented and this reduces 465 million dollars in additional public health expenses in the consuming countries.

 

In the same way, the participation of the 106 institutions of these 41 countries, that contribute in the fight against drug trafficking validate the compliance of the guidelines set forth in the United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic drugs and Psychotropic Substances, which promote the cooperation among the parties so that they can cope more effectively the various aspects of illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances having an international dimension to maximize the impact on the fight against drugs.

 

According to estimates, to produce the 716 tons of the cocaine troops found, 363,411 hectares of jungle, forest were necessary and numerous bodies of water were destroyed which hit a large number of living beings represented in fauna and flora. It is clear to everyone that drug trafficking produces high levels of pollution and serious consequences for biodiversity and natural resources, since the substances pollute the rivers and streams that supply drinking water to the inhabitants.
