In San Andrés Island, 400 kilograms of underwater waste were collected

En San Andrés Isla, recolectados 400 kilogramos de residuos submarinos

During the activity, the points with the highest concentration of waste were identified and marked, in order to resume work during the month of August.

As part of the Sea Week, the Colombian Navy, together with diving schools and biologists of the Island, carried out an underwater cleaning activity in the sector of Cayo Acuario, department of San Andrés and Providencia.

Twelve divers participated in the activity, including staff of the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés and volunteers, who made a dive to a depth of 10 meters to collect solid waste, which hits the coral ecosystems. 400 kilograms of waste were removed such as: glass bottles, cans, electronic equipment and clothing, among others.

This is what Lina Hudson, a diver of the LionFish Expedition diving school, said: "Actions bring consequences. We must be more careful with the elements that we transport to these natural spaces that, when they reach the sea, become an inconvenience for the specimens and, therefore, for the ecosystem.”

For more than an hour, the divers followed the usual route of commercial ships, extracting more than ten bags with waste, which were transported to the dock of the Coast Guard Station of San Andrés for weighing, classification and final disposal.

It should be noted that the points with the highest concentration of waste were identified and marked in order to resume work during the month of August.

The Colombian Navy, through the Specific Command of San Andrés and Providencia, will continue contributing to the preservation and care of sea ecosystems and the Seaflower, declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2000.
