The 63-year-old man would be the coordinator between the GAO Clan del Golfo and transnational crime organizations for the massive shipments of illicit substances from Colombia to Central America.
Alias Sombrero would be providing economic offers to members of the Military Forces to obtain information on the location of naval units and thus evade maritime operations.
For more than a decade, the authorities were following the trail of alias Sombrero, an alleged member of the Organized Armed Group, GAO, Clan del Golfo, who was arrested in the village of Sapzurro, Chocó department, for the alleged crimes of trafficking, manufacturing or carrying narcotics and association to commit crimes.
The coordinated operation carried out by means of a raid procedure on a house in the department of Chocó was executed by troops of the Navy Infantry Battalion No.16 and officials of the Technical Investigation Corps of the Attorney General's Office.
This individual, considered a high-value target, would belong to the Efrén Vargas Gutiérrez substructure of the Clan del Golfo, where he would allegedly be coordinating the shipment of about 50 tons of cocaine hydrochloride annually from this village on the border with Panama, considered a strategic route for illicit trafficking of substances. In addition, he allegedly established contact with active officers of the Military Forces to provide them monetary offers in exchange for information of the military operation and the location of the naval units and in this way evade maritime operations and facilitate the structures of this Organized Armed Group the shipment of illicit substances abroad.
Alias Sombrero, who has been committing crimes in this criminal structure for more than 12 years, had already been arrested in October 2014 in this same sector of the Chocó department for being related to drug trafficking activities.
After completing the judicial processes derived from his first arrest, the intelligence agencies detected his return to the border area with Panama, where he was trying to restructure the logistics and collection networks for new drug trafficking organizations.
This arrest becomes a strategic blow against the criminal activities carried out by this illegal structure from the Gulf of Urabá in Antioquia, to Central American countries, limiting so the action of its support networks and criminal intelligence in this border area.
