With the purpose of preserving one of the protected and vulnerable specimens of the country, the Colombian Aerospace Force, in a coordinated work with the Conservation Park, Corantioquia and the Jaime Duque Park Foundation, carried out the transfer of two Andean Bears, to the Spectacled Bear Sanctuary in Guasca, department of Cundinamarca.
The bears, one of them rescued by Corantioquia and the other that was born in the Conservation Park, were taken in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter of the No. 5 Air Combat Command, permanently monitored by the biologist and veterinarian who were in the same way on board the aircraft, checking all the time the of these two bears (bear cub and juvenile).
This transfer is part of a conservation project of the Park, through which it is intended to prepare the individuals for their reintroduction to the wild and thus contribute to the preservation of the specimen.
According to the technical criteria of interdisciplinary professionals of the Corporation, it was decided to transfer the bears to the Sanctuary in order to give them the possibility of adaptation in this Institution which has the experience, staff and facilities to provide all the care and efforts so that the animals learn the necessary skills to survive in the wild.
It is important to know that the tremarctos ornatus are the only bears in South America, they are solitary and excellent climbers. It is a shy specimen that tends to run away from humans, but dangerous if it feels threatened. They are key for the Andean ecosystems since they enable the different mechanisms of forest regeneration, through the dispersion of seeds, the transportation of matter and the cycling of energy.
It is expected that the specimens will learn the necessary skills that will lead them in the future to be able to defend themselves in their wild environment and subsequently be able to survive.
