As part of the comprehensive maritime control and security operations carried out by the Colombian Navy in the Colombian Pacific, a ship carrying illegally 237 cubic meters of wood was seized, in the bay of the port of Buenaventura, department of Valle del Cauca.
During maritime patrol work, the Colombian Sailors detected a boat manned by six people, which was traveling in a suspicious manner. When boarding and inspecting the ship, it was evident that it had on board, 820 rectangular wooden slats, corresponding to 237 cubic meters.
When required to show the legal documents to the environmental authority, for the transportation and commercialization of forest products, the crew members stated that they did not have the permission issued by the Regional Autonomous Corporation, which are mandatory according to current environmental regulations.
After the review, the boat, its crew and the material found, were taken to the Isla Pájaro sector, in the bay of Buenaventura, where officials of the Environmental Public Establishment - EPA made a detailed inspection. In the review it was confirmed that it was Sajo and Otobo type wood, which was being transported without authorization, configuring an environmental violation.
The personnel and equipment were put into custody of the authority, the illegal activity classified as “illicit exploitation of renewable natural resources”, in accordance with article 328 of the Colombian Criminal Code (Law 599 of 2000), is subject to penalties ranging from fines to prison sentences.
