The General Maritime Directorate (Dimar), through the Pacific Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research Center (CCCP), presented a positive report at the end of the XXV Regional Joint Research Cruise ERFEN (Regional Study of the Ni帽o/Ni帽a Phenomenon), carried out aboard the oceanographic platform ARC Providencia.

The voyage that began on September 7 in Tumaco, toured the Colombian Pacific Basin (CPC), insular areas (Malpelo and Gorgona Islands) and the Nari帽o Pacific zone for 30 days, completing 105 sampling stations that led to the collection of physical, chemical and biological components with which it is intended to identify variables such as temperature and salinity and thus establish a diagnosis of the oceanographic behavior of the region.

The distribution of the results of this expedition will be carried out through various phases, starting in three months with a preliminary report focused on the physical components, then, by the next 6 to 10 months, the information about the biological and chemical components will be obtained and finally, in 12 months, the final Cruise report will be available.

This study is part of the commitments acquired by Colombia as a member of the Permanent Group of the South Pacific (CPPS), promoted by the member countries, through the ERFEN program that leads to continue to conduct the surveillance operations of the conditions associated with El Ni帽o/La Ni帽a events in the Southeast Pacific (PSE).

The Maritime Authority continues to provide valuable information for the generation of knowledge throughout the Colombian Pacific through the constant monitoring of the oceanographic behavior of this phenomenon.
