Through this operation, Colombian National Army reaffirms its commitment to environmental protection, extending its mission beyond Ground Combat Battalion ecosystems to the sea ecosystem.
In Santa Marta, department of Magdalena, the Infantry Battalion N.掳 5 General Jos茅 Mar铆a C贸rdova, of the Second Brigade, and the Battalion of Comprehensive operation and Development N.掳 1 joined Petrobras, Jorge Tadeo Lozano University, Mundo Marino and CorpoMagdalena in an emotional event to rescue 50 juvenile Hawksbill sea turtles, a millenary specimen in critical danger of extinction.
The participation of the Army in the introduction of Hawksbill turtles underlines that the defense of the nation includes, as a priority, the protection of natural heritage, understanding that the health of the seas is fundamental for the future of Colombia.
The main purpose of this work is to provide juvenile turtles with a space that leads them to have a safe space to survive in their natural environment. The rescued turtles have a radio device that will locate them and send reports of their finding in different parts of the world, which are vital to verify their survival and generate data of scientific value for conservation.
The introductory activity was not only an act of conservation, but in the same way a moment of family integration and environmental awareness.
Families who were on the beach spontaneously joined the activity. Seeing these turtles return to their natural environment is a symbol of a better future and a powerful hope for new generations.
This event should motivate further strengthen cooperation to be conducted by institutions for environmental protection. It is a reminder that conservation is a collective duty that requires the discipline and commitment of everyone.
