Augmented reality techniques will be used to simulate virtual environments where offshore clean energy generation will be analyzed.

Researchers of the Innovation and Technology Center - ICP and the Colombian Navy will join this scientific expedition through the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean and Antarctica.

With the purpose of collecting information that leads to carry out projects on clean energy generation in the open sea, decarbonization and protection of Navy ecosystems, Ecopetrol and the Colombian Navy signed a framework agreement to lead scientific expeditions through the waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean and Antarctica.

The expeditions plan to travel 24,272 nautical miles (equivalent to 39,000 kilometers) on board the ships ARC Gloria and ARC Simón Bolívar. Their crew will be led by researchers of the Colombian Navy, who will have the support of the Innovation and Technology Center - ICP team.

During these scientific expeditions, the potential of clean energy generation will be analyzed through the implementation of augmented reality techniques and simulation of virtual environments.

In the same way, technical evaluations will be carried out to measure the impact that the use of conventional and renewable Navy diesel has on the environment and on maritime operations. The data collected will be used in the design of initiatives to leverage the energy transition and to mitigate greenhouse gases.

"This alliance leads the Ecopetrol Group to join efforts with other institutions to carry out scientific, technological and operational resources in the maritime field. This will serve to transfer knowledge between the scientific teams and contribute to the achievement of the goals set by the organization in terms of decarbonization and emissions reduction, in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change,” said Alberto Consuegra, executive Vice President of Ecopetrol.

”It is an honor to be at such a significant moment, to give life to the special agreement on science, technology and innovation cooperation conducted by the Colombian Navy and Ecopetrol, This agreement marks a historical milestone, which becomes a reality, signaling a new journey towards energy efficiency, a vital instrument to reduce the carbon footprint of our services and processes, thus contributing to the goals of the Colombian State in the purpose of reducing emissions for the benefit of the environment," said Admiral Francisco Cubides, Commander of the Colombian Navy.

Scientific expeditions will reach Antarctica

The crossings to the Caribbean Sea and in the Pacific Ocean will be covered by the ARC Gloria Training Ship, Colombia's ambassador ship in the seas of the world and itinerant sample of the national culture.

Another expedition will be made on board the ARC oceanographic ship Simón Bolívar, the largest ship that has been built with Colombian hands and minds in the national territory for scientific research. It will sail along the Pacific until it reaches Antarctica.

Through this alliance, Ecopetrol and the Colombian Navy are joining forces to conduct the identification of clean offshore energy sources that contribute to the just energy transition and the goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
