The General Maritime Directorate (Dimar), through the Port Authority of Buenaventura, provided a positive report in terms of tourism and maritime transportation during the whale watching season that took place by July 15 and October 17, 2022, in which the movement of 215,581 passengers aboard 10,619 ships was reported.
During this period, in which humpback whales or Yubartas arrive in the Colombian Pacific after traveling 8,500 kilometers from Antarctica and southern Chile, to carry out their reproductive process, the Port Authority carried out awareness-raising operations and instruction in comprehensive maritime safety, in order to reinforce issues such as: use and carrying of security elements; documents sought for navigation; status of ships and recommendations for a safe sighting.
In the same way, in coordination with the District Mayor's Office, Colombian Navy, National Police, Civil Defense and other authorities of the region, security operations were conducted at the pier and the beaches, with the aim of accompanying, controlling and monitoring the boats that sailed of the tourist pier, which led to have safe activities, with zero accidents or situations that put human life at risk at sea or the marine environment.
Another eventuality that attracted tourism to the region was the week of school recess, in which the transportation of 29,766 passengers aboard 1,491 boats was reported, which had as main destinations La Bocana, Piangüita, Piangüa Grande, Magüipi, Juanchaco, Ladrilleros and La Barra.
This positive report is the result of the efforts of the Maritime Authority in the safeguarding of human life at sea, the protection of the marine environment and comprehensive maritime security, generating favorable conditions to position the Pacific region as an unmissable natural tourist destination.
