“In a significant show of heroism and genuine commitment to the noblest principles, more than 5,100 soldiers embarked on a long journey from the port of Buenaventura to Pusan, leaving behind everything they knew, the language they spoke, their loved ones and the land that saw them born,” General Jorge León González Parra, Joint Chief of Staff of the Military Forces, recalled in his speech.
The above took place as an act of gratitude and remembrance to the more than five thousand Colombian soldiers and sailors who fought in the Korean War, which is why the General Command of the Military Forces paid a tribute to the heroes of Colombia, men of the Colombia Battalion who, 71 years ago, completed their mission with courage and determination in foreign lands.
The ceremony, which took place in the Memorial Pagoda of the Superior War College, General Rafael Reyes Prieto, was presided over by the chairman of the Joint chiefs of the Military Forces, general Jorge León González Parra, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea in Colombia, Choo Jong You, and the Commanders of the Military Forces.
During this commemoration a wreath laying took place in tribute to the soldiers and sailors who responded to the call of the UN, on behalf of Colombia, as the only country in Latin America that supported South Korea after the invasion by North Korea in 1950, leaving on the field of battle, their lives in order to defend the principles of freedom and democracy.
With this important commemoration, the Military Forces remember the Colombians who gave their lives in support of a partner nation, which continues to thank the efforts of these heroes.
