With the aim of further strengthening the maritime comprehensive security throughout the region, the General Maritime Directorate (Dimar), through the Center for Research in Oceanographic and Hydrographic Pacific (CCCP in Spanish), with the support of the oceanographic research ship ARC Malpelo, conducts a hydrographic registry and update the nautical chart number 521.
This nautical chart, belonging to Malpelo Island, is prepared by the use of multibeam technology that leads the Maritime Authority to report data such as depth and characteristics of the seabed essential to analyze this navigable area, and maintain a continuous registry of the depths in the area.
On the other hand, it leads to collect technical and scientific information of the coastlines and marine areas of this region.
With this study, the Maritime Directorate through the National Hydrographic Service will obtain important data and tools that are essential for decision-making in matters of safe navigation, protection of the sea environment, development of coastal communities, and economic reactivation of the country.
In addition, Dimar will continue to exercise sovereignty over the Colombian Pacific and provide maritime scientific information on the maritime interior waters, marine and fluvio-marine systems, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone and the rivers under its zone of responsibility.
The Colombian Maritime Authority ratifies its commitment to the maritime and river development of the Nation, based on the research, products and services available to the productive groups and community that have consolidated Colombia as a bio-oceanic power.
