The operation was carried out in a coordinated manner by the Coast Guard Stations of Barranquilla and Santa Marta, the Port Authority of Barranquilla and the Caribbean Aeronautical Group.

The successful rescue took place in Salamanca Island after a sailboat from Curacao bound for Barranquilla, despite receiving a warning call about adverse weather conditions of the Maritime Authority, was adrift due to failures in its mechanical system, which forced it to sail.

In development of sea control patrols, Coast Guard units of Santa Marta in adverse weather conditions deployed a Rapid Reaction Unit, being supported in Atlantic waters by a unit of the Coast Guard Station of Barranquilla, who arrived in the area of difficult access, where the sailboat that was manned by a foreign citizen was found with the support of an Aeronaval unit type helicopter Bell 412, which carried out the extraction by air of the man, an elderly adult.

Once safe in the aircraft he was taken to the facilities of the Port Authority of Barranquilla where he received basic first aid, being in good health, being assisted by firemen of the city, who conducted the healing of a wound in one of the fingers of his hand, with no greater complexity.
