In a joint effort to promote the health and well-being of military trained dogs, the No. 5 Air Combat Command, CACOM 5, successfully conducted the aeromedical transfer of Dante, a four-year-old black labrador, a member of the No.14 Battle of Calibío of Colombian National Army, who was severely hit by the shock wave of a mine explosion.
Its human guide was in the same way injured in one of his legs, a victim of the same anti-personnel mine in a rural area of the municipality of Anorí, Antioquia. Given the critical situation of the soldier and the severity of his injuries, the National Personnel Recovery Center, CENRP and the Colombian Aerospace Force deployed from Rionegro, Antioquia a UH-60 “Angel” helicopter equipped with rescuers and doctors who provided the necessary assistance to stabilize the patient and his four-legged companion.
The soldier was handed over to medical personnel of the Pablo Tobón Uribe Hospital in the city of Medellín, while the trained dog was taken to CACOM 5, where he was provided with all the necessary assistance by the veterinary medical staff of the Canine Section of the Air Unit with experience in this type of operations, thus stabilizing it to later be taken to a specialized veterinary center to continue with its treatment.
