Colombia and Canada strengthen cooperation against transnational drug trafficking crime

Colombia y Canadá fortalecen cooperación contra el crimen transnacional del narcotráfico

Minister Pedro Sánchez Suárez met with the Head of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, with the aim of consolidating a mutual exchange of experiences and resources to combat threats and also working to increase the protection of communities.

The senior official recognized the work of Canada to support the stabilization of Haiti, emphasizing that the security of the Caribbean and the Americas is indivisible and that alliances are vital to confront threats that transcend borders.

Both countries will continue to strengthen joint intelligence operations to curb criminal operations.

This is the beginning of the international agenda of the Minister of National Defense, Pedro Sánchez Suárez, who had an important meeting in Canada, with the aim of consolidating joint operations that led continuing to combat transnational threats that hit the region.

This is how, in Ottawa, the Minister met with Bryan Larkin, Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Through a frank and constructive dialogue, both countries reaffirmed the importance of international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and transnational crime.

During the meeting, the officials agreed to strengthen a permanent exchange of experiences, good practices and resources to confront drug trafficking and other transnational crimes, as part of the binational commitment to the security and protection of communities.

In the same way, progress was made in the coordination of operations aimed at strengthening police resources, with the purpose of having modern tools and knowledge suitable to face the challenges derived from climate change and social protest environments.

Canada, a strategic ally on security, trade and education issues, recognized Colombia for its leadership and strength in the fight against drugs and drug trafficking. In this regard, he reiterated his willingness to provide support to consolidate institutions and weaken illegal structures.

Both countries agreed to strengthen joint operations, the exchange of intelligence information and the coordinated deployment of efforts in the face of various threats that cross borders.

Minister Pedro Sánchez Suárez in the same way highlighted Canada's commitment to international efforts to support the stabilization of Haiti. The high official assured that the security of the Caribbean and the Americas is indivisible, and that only through solid alliances will it be possible to confront illegal groups that operate without recognizing borders.

Within the framework of this agenda, the Minister will reaffirm Colombia's commitment to democratic values and international security during his participation in the Halifax Security Forum, one of the most relevant multilateral spaces in the hemisphere. There, he will hold high-level meetings with his counterparts and with senior international representatives, in order to strengthen strategic cooperation, share lessons learned and consolidate alliances to face emerging threats.

This meeting, which has been planned for several weeks, will make it possible to advance in a joint work based on respect, trust and strategic vision, to build a safer environment, strengthen institutions and confront, from multilateralism, the criminal networks that disturb both nations.
