In a recent comprehensive maritime control and security operation, the Colombian Navy carried out an interception procedure on an Ecuadorian-flagged ship, which was sailing irregularly through waters adjacent to the department of Nariño, with two Ecuadorian crew members and a Colombian, who, apparently, were completing their fishing work in the area.
During the inspection to the boat, illegal fishing activity was evidenced in Colombian waters, so the individuals were taken to the dock of the Primary Coast Guard Station of Tumaco, the nearest port, to conduct a more detailed review.
The officials of the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Authority - AUNAP, confirmed that the ship was carrying 82 kilograms of goldfish, 33 kilograms of pennant and 49 kilograms of marlin, for 164 kilograms of sea fauna illegally extracted.
The individuals were put into custody of the Attorney General's Office for the alleged crime of illegal fishing, in accordance with article 328C of the Colombian Criminal Code. For its part, the fish found was handed over to AUNAP for proper disposition.
It should be noted that this type of activity represents a violation of fishing regulations and puts the health of the final consumer at risk. Illegal fishing lacks the proper cooling chain, which can damage the quality and safety of seafood products, causing problems for those who consume them.
