Colombian Navy contributes to the clarification of the truth

The Naval institution presented two reports and a documentary on the internal armed conflict in Colombia.

These research products will be of great importance and will serve as elements for the final report that will be presented by the Group for the Clarification of Truth, Coexistence and Non-repetition.

Yesterday in a virtual ceremony, the Colombian Navy presented to the Group for the Clarification of Truth, Coexistence and Non-Repetition, two investigative reports called: Institutional Transformations and operations of fronts 35 and 37 of the extinct Farc, in the Montes de Mar铆a, as well as the documentary: Invictos Protegiendo la Flor Eterna de In铆rida (Invictus, Protecting the Eternal Flower of In铆rida).

The first report, called Institutional Transformations, is an investigative work that demonstrates the efforts and transformations that have taken place in the Colombian Navy within the framework of the Colombian armed conflict. This work is the result of an investigation carried out by the interdisciplinary groups of the Directorate of Victims and Historical Memory of the Comprehensive Legal Headquarters of the National Navy.

The document proposes in six chapters the construction of a chronological line that leads to identify the changes generated and the historical process of the Institution, the operational effort made by the different components, as well as the Resources to face the challenges of the internal armed conflict since the 50s.

These transformations have taken place within the framework of the four lines that the Colombian Navy has in its process map: Strategic Process, Mission Process, Support Process and Evaluation Process.

The second report entitled : Operations of fronts 35 and 37 of the extinct Farc, in the Montes de Mar铆a, is a compilation of terrorist operations, homicides, kidnappings, attacks, damages by minefields and explosives in this subregion of the Montes de Mar铆a from 1980 to 2016. Military archives and public documents were consulted for these investigations.

This text describes the violation of Human Rights and the International Humanitarian Law that were committed by the Farc, not only against the Military Forces, but in the same way against civilians without discrimination or distinction of race, sex or age, attacks that show the cruelty of the operations conducted by these terrorist groups, which also damaged the history of Colombia, and in particular this area of the country.

The activity culminated with the distribution and screening of the documentary video: Invictos Protegiendo la Flor Eterna de In铆rida, which recounts in 44 minutes the attempt by the Farc to take Puerto In铆rida, a municipality in the department of Guain铆a, in 1999.

This investigation led to the collection of testimony from Active Reserve Navy Colonel Luis Miguel Cote G贸mez, who served in the rank of Navy Captain as Chief of Naval Operations of the River Navy Battalion No.80, in addition to testimonies of civilians, military personnel, and indigenous leaders who witnessed the events.

This virtual ceremony, which was transmitted through the digital platforms of the Truth Group, was attended by Father Francisco de Roux, President of the institution, who received the investigative products from Admiral Gabriel Alfonso P茅rez Garc茅s, Commander of the Colombian Navy.

During the last four years, the Colombian Navy, through its Directorate of Victims and Historical Memory, has paid attention to 40 requests of the Truth Clarification Group, and in addition it has presented reports on victims and five videos about attacks on Military Units, participating in three listening spaces made by this institution that make visible the victims among the Military Forces and their families.
