Coast Guard units of the Colombian Navy, in coordination with the Maritime General Directorate – Dimar, rescued three people of Turkish nationality, since the catamaran-type sailboat on which they were sailing to Panama, capsized in Colombian waters, approximately 16 nautical miles (29 kilometers) from Puerto Velero - Atlántico, Saturday afternoon, January 18.
The facts took place about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, when the Traffic Control and Maritime Surveillance Tower of Barranquilla received an alert call from a cargo boat transiting through the sector, in which they reported the sighting of a sailboat that was in a state of emergency, about to capsize, which required urgent assistance.
Immediately, a Rapid Reaction Unit - URR, of the Coast Guard Station of Barranquilla, was sent, which arrived at the scene in a few minutes, finding a life raft with two people inside, who were brought to safety by Coast Guard crew. Subsequently, the URR recovered the third person who had been rescued by the cargo ship that had reported on the emergency.
The three rescued people were transferred to a safe port in the city of Barranquilla, where medical assistance was provided and then they were put into custody of Migración Colombia.
