In one of the operations, five individuals were arrested for the alleged crime of illicit exploitation of renewable natural resources.
According to figures of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, deforestation in Colombia in 2024 reached 113,608 hectares reported.
Working for the protection and conservation of natural resources, the Colombian Navy, through the Navy Infantry Brigade No. 4, in the framework of two river operations, seized 700 cubic meters of wood, which would be being transported illegally in the department of Nariño.
In the first operation, which was carried out in the municipality of El Charco, La Capilla sector, crew members of the Navy Infantry River Battalion No.43 reported the arrest of five individuals, who were transporting 550 pieces of wood on board a trailer-type ship, without the respective permits issued by the environmental authority.
Immediately, the coordination were made with officials of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of Nariño - CORPONARIÑO- to conduct the legal procedures with the material, who determined that it was 200 cubic meters of wood, sajo specimen. For their part, the arrested people were put into custody of the Criminal Investigation Section – SIJÍN - of the National Police, so that they face alleged charges for the crime of illicit exploitation of renewable natural resources, in accordance with article 328 of the Colombian Criminal Code.
In the second operation, troops of the Navy Infantry River Battalions No. 40 and 41, found 500 cubic meters of wood in the Brazo Largo sector, municipality of Francisco Pizarro. During the procedure, nobody could prove the origin, purpose or legality of the shipment, so, in coordination with CORPONARIÑO – Tumaco, the wood was confiscated.
