The General Maritime Directorate (Dimar), through the Center for Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research of the Pacific (CCCP), conducts the analysis of chemical, biological and physical samples obtained during the Oceanographic Expedition - ENOS 2021, which took place in the southern zone of the Colombian Pacific Basin in the second half of the year.
Through the aforementioned analyses, the researchers of the Maritime Authority evaluate the spatial and temporal behavior of different parameters of the water column, with the purpose of identifying the abundance of plankton and its relationship with the physico-chemical variables obtained in the study area.
On the other hand, these studies search, analyze and monitor variables such as sea surface temperature, salinity, density, among others, that determine the impact of the phenomenon, its relationship with the near Pacific coast of Colombia; they also provide technical tools for decision making in environmental and socio-economic aspects.
This Expedition continues to conduct the follow-up that leads to determine the evolution of the El Niño phenomenon in this area of the country and comply with the international commitments as a member state of the Permanent Group of the Southeast Pacific (CPPS). It also contributes to the conservation and responsible use of natural resources and environment for the benefit of comprehensive and sustainable development of the member countries.
Through this type of Expeditions, the Maritime Authority ratifies its commitment to the study and understanding of natural phenomena; additionally, it guarantees the development of coastal communities, and the international recognition of the country.
