With deep respect and visible emotion, the Colombian Military Forces paid the last tribute to General (r) Jorge Enrique Mora Rangel, in a funeral ceremony that brought together the country's military high commanders and his family. Admiral Francisco Cubides Granados, Chief of defense of Colombia, gave a speech that resonated in the hearts of the attendees, saying goodbye to a man whose experience “forever marked the recent history of our country.”
Admiral Cubides began his speech by honoring a "flagship soldier," a Colombian whose life was inextricably linked to courage, honor and sacrifice. He highlighted that, for General Mora, the uniform was a "sacred commitment" and that every step, mission and decision was guided by the conviction that serving the homeland is the highest duty.
The tribute focused on the unwavering role of General Mora during the most challenging chapters of Colombia's recent history. Upon assuming command of Colombian National Army in 1998, amid "years of intense confrontation, of growing threats," there, in adversity, "the military mettle emerged. His greatness was consolidated there," Cubides said.
General Mora was in the heart of El Caguán, at a time of oppression and national bewilderment, that General Mora uttered the phrase that would become a beacon for the entire institution: "The Military Forces are not on their knees."
The chief of the Colombian military forces emphasized the importance of this statement, describing it not as a political response, but as an “ethical pronouncement, an affirmation of institutional dignity, a defense of military honor”. This lesson, the Admiral recalled, taught entire generations that moral strength is not negotiable and that one should never bow to intimidation.
The close and strategic leader
His leadership reached its climax in 2002, when he was appointed Chief of defense of Colombia. Under his leadership, the country was able to "regain the initiative, strengthen national security and restore confidence in institutions."
Admiral Cubides recalled the character of General Mora: not simply heavy, but "temperate, forged in combat and academia." His authority was exercised with closeness, because "he understood the troops, took care of them, recognized their effort."
Addressing the family - his wife, Gloria Oviedo de Mora, and his sons José Fernando and Juan Diego -, the Admiral extended the accompaniment of soldiers, sailors and airmen, honoring not only the commander, but the "noble, reserved and deeply human being who works for his family.”
When saying good bay to his commander, Admiral Cubides acknowledged that today his absence "weighs, hurts and moves," but at the same time, "illuminates."
"Men like him do not disappear; they live in the flags that fly freely, in the heart of every soldier, sailor and airman," he said. “General Mora leaves a firm legacy in institutions: discipline, courage and humility.”
"You taught us that leadership is exercised with integrity, that discipline is an act of love for the homeland, that dignity is not negotiable and that peace is in the same way a duty," the chief of the military forces concluded, entrusting General Mora’s soul to God.
The Military Forces said goodbye to the great reference, with the respect reserved for men who transcend, sealing the tribute with an eternal recognition:
"Honor and glory to General Mora Rangel, Colombia recognizes him. The military force is enormous and history welcomes him as one of its great defenders. Rest in peace. And thank you, infinite thanks, for having demonstrated with your life what it means to serve the homeland with loyalty, courage and sacrifice."
