The Governors Forum for the Amazonas was held in Bogotá, a strategic space that brought together national authorities, representatives from several countries, environmental organizations, security experts and regional governments, with the purpose of analyzing the current challenges of the Amazonas region and strengthening inter-institutional coordination in the defense of the territory.
The event began with the words of Vice Admiral Javier Alfonso Jaimes Pinilla, Commander of the Naval Force of the Amazon; of the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway, Mr. Nilsrifleneng; and of the Director of the Group for Social Development SDG, Mr. Alberto Lara, who agreed on the necessity of consolidating coordinated efforts to work for raising environmental sustainability, social development and comprehensive security in the Amazon region.
During the activity, experts in environmental conservation, sustainable development, security, organized crime and territorial governance shared analysis on the current situation of the Amazon, highlighting the effects generated by illegal activities such as deforestation, illegal mining, drug trafficking, specimen trafficking and the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources. In the same way, the challenges arising from the transnational criminal organizations operating in the border area were addressed.
The afternoon activity introduced institutional and international cooperation initiatives aimed at improving river control resources, promoting alternative development, strengthening the role of women in security and peace environments, and conducting technological innovation for the protection of the Amazon territory.
