We regret the demise of the Minister of Defense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo Garc铆a. A life dedicated to serve Colombians. We wish to his family, friends and colleagues, strength and unity.
Carlos Holmes Trujillo Garc铆a served as Minister of National Defense from November 16, 2019.
Trujillo Garc铆a was a lawyer with great experience and knowledge of the public sector of Colombia. He was Doctor of Law and Political and Social Sciences of the University of Cauca, with specialization in Criminal Law and Criminology, and Master in International Business of the Sophia University, in Tokyo (Japan).
As part of his diplomatic experience, he represented Colombia in different diplomatic positions in Japan: he was Consul of Colombia, in Tokyo, and ambassador of Colombia, in Japan.
He was the Colombia's permanent representative to the OAS; Colombia's ambassador to the governments of Austria, Russia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He was also the head of the Colombian Mission to the European Union.
His interest in Colombian democracy, which was evident throughout his political life, allowed him to have an active participation in the Constituent Assembly of 1991 and in the founding of the Colombian Federation of Municipalities, in which he was its first president.
During his career, he was Mayor of Cali; Minister of National Education; and High Commissioner for Peace. He also served as Minister of the Interior (in charge of managing the relations between the national government and the local administrative divisions) and Delegate Minister of Presidential Functions.
Statesman, professor in different universities and columnist in different national media. His intellectual and academic contribution was reflected in Works such as El Compromiso, El Voto Program谩tico, and Al O铆do de Uribe: C贸mo iniciar un nuevo proceso de paz en Colombia.
Before being Minister of Defense, Holmes Trujillo served as Minister of International Relations.
As the leader of the Ministry of Defense, he directed the Military Forces and the Police, as well as the leader of the GSED (Social and Business Defense Group), towards the search for the results that would provide Colombians with security, so they could live and work peacefully.
A lifetime dedicated to public service. There is not the slightest doubt of his commitment to Colombia.
