In more than 60 thousand square meters of the rural areas of the departments of Putumayo and Huila, soldiers of the Humanitarian Demining Engineers Battalion No. 5 ruled out the presence of antipersonnel mines.

The first three dangerous areas were cleared in the village Miraflores in the municipality of Valle del Guamuez, in the department of Putumayo. To date more than 10 polygonal areas using techniques of manual demining with the aid of trained dogs (120,000 square meters) are free of contamination of mines antipersonnel.

However, 10 humanitarian demining units continue in the area, to liberate the territory where so far 18 explosive devices have been destroyed.

As for the work carried out in Baraya, in the department of Huila, the military have worked on about 21,000 square meters, which were cleared with manual demining.

With the decontamination of the two areas, the inhabitants will start the plantings of tree tomato and passion fruit. Besides troops also will undertake the maintenance of the school of the sector to benefit about 100 children.

For the inhabitants of the villages of Rio Blanco, La Libertad, Turkestan, Versalles, Las Perlas and Venadito, demining is tranquility and progress, because in addition to walking safely, they can re-cultivate.
